This is too true. Fortunately, services like Loopt and Foursquare can be linked to update Twitter which in turn updates Facebook and/or MySpace. If not for these multi-service and chain updates, I don't think I (or many) would bother with it all.
There's another point there, though. More and more of my friends are using iPhone checkbook registers complete with receipt-picture-taking. Starbucks and Chipotle have apps to assemble your orders on the phone. A plethora of apps let you calculate and track calorie consumption with any food purchase. Social apps' locations must be updated, rated, recommended, and commented upon.
It would be interesting to count the number of people who can walk into a restaurant/store and not pull out their smartphones. I bet they'd fit all on one hand.
